The UKRI STFC Introductory Course in Astronomy for New Research Students will be held in the School of Physical Sciences (SPS) at the University of Kent in the week August 26 to 30, 2019. The meeting will be hosted by the Centre of Astronomy and Planetary Sciences within SPS supported by the School’s Public Engagement and Communication (PEC) team and the Institute of Physics.
The School will comprise lectures covering all aspects of modern astronomical research and presentations on current and forthcoming space missions and large scale projects which will influence the future academic careers of new research students. The School will also contain complementary activities related to student training (Public engagement and science communication training).
Social activities will include a reception, a BBQ (coinciding with tours and activities in the on-site observatory) and a social conference dinner. We also plan a public event to coincide with the School and exploit Canterbury’s religious heritage- a lecture/debate on Science and Religion.
